VIII Engaged Ethnographic Festival VIZANTROP:
“VIZANTR8P: Between Documentation and Intervention: Film as a Social Practice”

  • Belgrade (Serbia) 13-15. November 2026.
  • More information at: vizantrop.org

In the contemporary context of economic crises and escalating conflicts, engaged film festivals are becoming important spaces for dialogue and critical reflection on emerging social and political crises. From an anthropological perspective, the responsibility of the researcher lies not only in the representation of communities, but also in recognizing and supporting local forms of social change.

Such transformations most often emerge within small, locally grounded communities—through political movements, activist practices, film collectives, self-organized student initiatives, and engaged artistic and scientific projects. Within these glocal contexts, alternative ways of understanding and organizing society take shape. Ethnographic film not only documents these processes, but also has the potential to make them visible and socially relevant.

Ethnographic research practices traditionally imply long-term and structured engagement with research participants, where knowledge is produced through collaborative fieldwork. In this context, engaged ethnographic film increasingly moves beyond its documentary function and becomes a medium through which local knowledge is articulated and transmitted. Films emerging from such practices do not merely record social realities, but act as active carriers of knowledge and platforms for dialogue—opening space for conversations about possible futures.

The large number of films submitted each year reflects a strong methodological diversity—from innovative approaches to ethnographic and documentary filmmaking, to experimental and poetic forms, as well as autoethnographic and multimodal audiovisual practices. In this context, the positioning of the author is no longer solely a matter of representation, but also of ethical and political engagement, where the presence of the researcher becomes a constitutive part of the research process.
It is therefore necessary to continuously rethink the role and purpose of engaged ethnographic film production, as well as its significance within the communities in which it is created and to which it is addressed. In a moment marked by intensifying social conflicts and inequalities, anthropology is increasingly moving toward what can be described as anthropologies of the future—a field that goes beyond analytical and descriptive frameworks and enters the domains of speculative, anticipatory, and transformative thinking, oriented toward imagining alternative social relations, new forms of collectivity, and collective action.

We invite authors to submit their films no later than August 15 via the official submission link. Applications are open in two program categories:

Submission Categories:

  • Main Category
includes films that address contemporary socio-political processes through ethnographic, documentary, and hybrid film forms. We especially welcome works that engage with economic crises, wars and conflicts, social inequalities, migration, identity politics, student movements, as well as locally grounded initiatives and forms of social transformation. This category also includes films emerging from engaged research practices, with a strong reflexive authorial position, as well as works that explore relationships between researcher and community and question the boundaries between art, science, and self-organized action.
  • Student Category (Audience Award)
is dedicated to student films characterized by experimental and innovative approaches, particularly in terms of methodology. This selection includes works exploring new forms of ethnographic expression, multimodal approaches, hybrid narratives, and alternative modes of representation, with a particular focus on the research process, reflexivity, and the engaged presence of the author. Within this category, we also encourage engaged ethnomusicologists to submit their audiovisual works.

Submission Requirements:

  • Films should be no older than 4 years.
  • Must align with the themes of the specified categories

Deadline for Submissions: 15th of August 2026
