As part of the pre-festival program of the sixth festival of engaged ethnographic film “Vizantrop”, which will be held from 13-15. November in the New Cinema Zvezda, we will watch the ethnographic film “Lamalera” by social anthropologist Carsten Tadi on Wednesday, October 30 at 8 p.m. in the Community Center Krov.
Duration: 54 min
Production: Denmark
Lamalera, located in eastern Indonesia, is famous for its traditional whaling. This ancient hunting technique, passed down from generation to generation, is the main source of life in the village. However, times are slowly changing as young people leave the village for work and study, while there is pressure from the outside world to stop their whaling. The perspectives of four locals are followed; Chris, a 15-year-old girl who attends the local high school, her father Karolous, an experienced harpooner, Ignacious, a respected shipbuilder, and sister Maria, a Catholic nun. Each of them give their opinion and insight into the aforementioned conflicts and welcome us into their world as we explore their daily lives. Audiences will get an intimate first-hand account of one of the world’s last indigenous whaling cultures, discovering how all aspects of Lamalera life are shaped and connected to their traditional whaling.
Karsten Tadi has a master’s degree in international development studies and social anthropology. This is his first feature-length documentary.
